Mala is a Sanskrit word led from Japamala which means “garland” or “impurity.” It is a loop of prayer beads that have been used when performing japa (reciting a mantra or other sacred sound) by sages and those with spiritual aspirations for thousands of years. The string is made up of 108 individual beads, which are used to keep count while chanting or repeating a mantra while meditating.
There are many theories behind the 108 beads on a Mala, which has long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism. Looking at the numbers: the number 1 stands for God, the universe or your own highest truth; 0 stands for emptiness and humility in spiritual practice; and 8 stands for infinity and timelessness. Another reason for the 108 meditation beads is because of the heart chakra. Each chakra runs along energy lines in the body. There are 108 energy lines that are used to create the heart chakra.
